Recognizing Excellence: The University Voices Awards 2025
In a bold move to reshape this narrative, USLA Kenya proudly announced the inaugural University Voices Awards 2025. This national platform is designed to celebrate excellence, impact, and transformative leadership within Kenya’s higher education ecosystem .
Speaking about the vision behind the awards, USLA CEO Albert Maloba underscored the important role that campuses play in grooming the nation’s future leaders:
“Youth leadership is not an accident. It is nurtured, disciplined, and mentored at the campus level. Most of our outstanding national leaders today were not born in boardrooms; they were molded in student leadership spaces where values, ethics, and responsibility were instilled.”
The Awards aim to highlight student leaders who exemplify integrity, innovation, service, and a commitment to national development—often without material incentives or recognition.
A Call for Strategic Investment: The Student Leadership Development Fund
Beyond celebrating wins, USLA is looking toward the future. We are urging the national government to consider instituting a Student Leadership Development Fund.
As Albert Maloba noted:
“Just like sports talents receive structured investment to produce gold medalists, leadership too must be nurtured to create ethical, visionary and patriotic leaders. If we invest in student leadership early, we will significantly reduce the rise of corrupt, unethical and self-centered leadership in the future.”
Such a fund would allow for structured leadership training, mentorship initiatives, governance capacity building, and innovation support for student-led ideas.
Building Capacity on the Ground
Our call for investment is not just theoretical. Across the country, we are seeing the fruits of intentional leadership training. Recently, institutions like Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) conducted intensive leadership training for student leaders, covering governance, ethics, conflict resolution, and financial management .
Similarly, the University of Nairobi held a comprehensive induction workshop for its student leaders, emphasizing accountability and ethical leadership . These initiatives align perfectly with USLA’s mission to empower student leaders to advocate for their rights, interests, and welfare while fostering collaboration across different institutions .
Looking Ahead: The Education Tourism Program
The University Voices Awards will also introduce the USLA Education Tourism Program, an innovative concept that extends learning through experience-based travel and exposure.
Students will be afforded opportunities to:
-
Experience different learning environments
